Agriculture currently dominates Uganda’s economy, employing 72 percent of the population, contributing 22.2% of GDP and generating 42% of the exports earnings. The agricultural sector is still characterized by low-input, low-output leading to dismal growth in the sector that registered 1.5 percent growth in Financial Year 2013/14.
Uganda’s population stands at about 34.9 million people as of 2014. Uganda has one of the fastest growing populations in the world at an annual growth rate of 3.2%. There are about 4.2 million small holder farmers in the country with 23 million (66 percent) people living in agriculture households.
